After nine months of enduring pregnancy pain, Mrs Aina died during childbirth. The baby survived delivery however she has been struggling for life since 2 months ago after her birth. The two months old baby was delivered at one of the government hospitals in Lagos where she was diagnosed of Jaundice shortly after birth. She has been in the intensive care unit since then till now.
The baby’s father has not showed up at the hospital since he went to bury his dead wife at the village. Presently, the hospital is taking care of the baby and still expecting the father to show up. The hospital’s social worker contacted HEI to help in the provision of funds needed to keep the baby alive. Of course, HEI swiftly assisted in the provision of funds, however, the hospital is in dire need of more funds to successfully save the innocent baby’s life.
New born jaundice is a yellowing of a baby’s skin and eyes. It is a very common disease and occurs when babies have a high level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during normal breakdown of red blood cells.
In most cases, jaundice will disappear within 2 to 3 weeks. Jaundice that persists longer than 3 weeks may be a symptom of an underlying condition. Additionally, high levels of bilirubin can put a baby at risk for deafness, cerebral palsy, or other forms of brain damage.
